Adopt a village annually to promote cashew nut cultivation
Venkatesh N. Hubballi, Director of Directorate of Cashewnut and Cocoa Development (DCCD), Kochi, on Monday suggested that the Directorate of Cashew Research (DCR), Puttur, adopt a village a year to promote cashewnut cultivation. Speaking at the foundation day programme of the DCR in Puttur, Mr. Hubballi said that the village adoption could be done to mark the foundation day of the DCR every year. If the DCR adopted a village for 2018-19 the DCCD would release ₹15 lakh to it to promote cashewnut cultivation, he said.
Mr. Hubballi said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called for expanding the area under cashewnut in the country by 1.20 lakh hectares in the next three years. Accordingly the Union Ministry of Agriculture has planned to promote it on 60,000 hectares in 13 States, including Karnataka, in the current financial year. The plan also coveres promoting it in the north-eastern States of Tripura and Meghalaya. The director said that the cashewnut sector now provided employment to 15 lakh people. Its domestic consumption was going up by 15% to 20% every year. “It is a future crop,” he said.
M.G. Nayak, director (in-charge), DCR, stressed on ultra high density planting of cashew nut saplings. He explained about the use of pruning technique and varieties suitable for ultra high density planting and its role in enhancing the productivity. Kannada and English pamphlets on ultra high density planting was released on the occasion. In his address, Sanjeeva Matandoor, MLA, Puttur, spoke on the role of agriculture in Indian society and the recent impacts of urbanisation on agriculture. He said youths should take up cashewnut cultivation as there was enough scope to get higher income compared to other crops. Prakash Natelkar, managing director, Karnataka Cashew Development Corporation, Mangaluru, also spoke.
